Let me open by stating that this is an uncorrected copy that I obtained through a giveaway. I am very happy that I had a chance to sit down and read it!

Second, I am going to steer clear of discussing anything that has to do with Mexican culture seeing how I, myself, am not Mexican so I can't speak to the accuracy of the culture represented.

That being said, this is a loose re-telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet without that pesky figure known as Death showing up. I have read so many books lately that has death and dying attached that it was nice to read something that was light-hearted.

The story is simple. Ramon and Julieta meet during the celebration of Day of the Dead and there is an instantaneous connection between them. Yet there are things that they don't know about each other, things that might give them pause.

He is extremely wealthy and she, while not poor, has worked very hard to make ends meet.

He has intentions of purchasing that block of Barrio Logan and turning her restaurant into the much despised by the locals Taco King.

Oh, did we mention that his father and her mother were once in love and his father, believing that her mother betrayed him, stole her fish taco recipe which he first used to create Taco King?

This was a very cute story. It was a little all over the place in some parts and it could have used more tension to give it the will they or won't they vibe, but I enjoyed it for what it was and felt the light-heartedness was refreshing!

I only got 60 pages in. And that's as far as I will ever get in this book. I 60 pages later and I didn't care at all about anything going on. I didn't care about Ramón or Julieta. I didn't care about her struggle with her business. I didn't care that he was struggling with his position. I didn't care when they finally kissed or when she figured out who he was. I can't believe that I read 60 pages of words that said a whole lot of nothing.

I didn't like it enough to keep reading but I didn't hate it enough to give it one star either.

Give it a shot, but it will most likely disappoint.

What an adorable read!
Ramon and Julieta is a loose Latinx re-telling of Romeo and Juliet.
From the get go of the book, we are educated on the state of gentrification in the San Diego city. Ramon being part of the big companies taking over, his slight guilt but also determination to succeed at constant battle in his character development.
Julieta a chef, with a fearless determination to make it despite the gentrification happening in her barrio.
They meet and there is instant attraction, even though they don't initially act on it.

I do wish that when it came to the intimacy scenes there was more pay-out. As I read their first reactions to observing each other and their attraction, it felt like an over promised later on when the scenes came up.
I also feel a lack of communication between both characters.
I think this book could have been more, with further character development and less fleshing out of the gentrification. It almost felt like a YA read with steam.
The book was just not for me.
