Quicksilver (The Fae & Alchemy Series Book 1)

From USA TODAY Bestselling Author Callie Hart comes a brand new, highly addicting enemies-to-lovers Romantasy with razor-sharp banter, heart-stopping action, and blistering hot romance that you won’t be able to put down!

Do not touch the sword.

Do
not turn the key.

Do
not open the gate.

In the land of the unforgiving desert, there isn’t much a girl wouldn’t do for a glass of water.

Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses, or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen’s reservoirs for as long as she can remember.

But a secret is like a knot.

Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone.

When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares…but it turns out they’re real, and Saeris has landed herself right in the middle of a centuries-long conflict that might just get her killed.

The first of her kind to tread the frozen mountains of Yvelia in over a thousand years, Saeris mistakenly binds herself to Kingfisher, a handsome Fae warrior, who has secrets and nefarious agendas of his own. He will use her Alchemist’s magic to protect his people, no matter what it costs him… or her.

Death has a name.

It is Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate.

His past is murky.

His attitude stinks.

And he’s the only way Saeris is going to make it home.

Be careful of the deals you make, dear child.

The devil is in the details...

“It’s under the most unbearable conditions that the sharpest, most dangerous weapons are forged…The quicksilver rippled in the crucible, geometric patterns forming and reforming over its surface. It was beautiful to look at, but strange—I hadn't seen it behave like this before. ‘Yes, a good secret. Very good. You want to stay. You want to save him. You must. You must…Not the brother. The Kingggfisshhherrr…Save him. Save the gates. Save Yyvelia…We are token. Key. Relic. Shield…Seal us with blood, Alchemist’...Blood. It always came down to blood in the end.” “‘I give you my blood in thanks, Saeris Fane.’ ‘Human’ had come first. Then ‘Oshellith,’ or ‘Osha,’ said with a hefty amount of disdain. Then ‘Little Osha,’ which had first been mocking but then shifted to endearment. But Fisher had said my name. Finally…Human, Fae, or Vampire. It doesn't matter how long you live, Saeris, you will always be most sacred to me." “He sat there, his bare, inked chest not moving, his black waves tumbling into his face, so perfect, so handsome, and that cursed fucking thing deep down in the basement of my soul ached and said mine.” A land of faeries and lesser Fae creatures—fire sprites, water sprites, air sprites and earth sprites. Madra, Belikon, Malcolm; Human, Fae, Vampire: three regents triumvirate. “There are countless realms out there, waiting to be found. Make one of them yours.” Callie Hart’s Quicksilver is a gift “For those who live their nightmares, so that others may have their dreams.”

I don't even know if I can formulate thoughts for this. I was a little less than half way through and already was wanting to start over and re-read it so it wouldn't end so soon. I went into this knowing the hype and having zero expectations because of that. I stayed away from reviews so I wouldn't read any spoilers...not even reading the synopsis on Amazon. When I tell you it was everything I wasn't expecting and more... I chose to have my first "read" be on Audible because one of the things I heard the most was that the voice actors did so well...and did they ever! I would have driven myself crazy not knowing pronunciations of characters and places had I dove straight into the physical/digital copy. Now when I go back and do my re-read (because I will SO be doing that! lol) I'll be able to annotate and appreciate it better. For the sake of not being one of the people I tried to avoid in the reviews, I won't spoil anything...but just do yourself a favor and read this. When I heard "This is the end of Quicksilver", I literally screamed "Noooo!" because I didn't want it to end. And it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger...because of course it did. I still feel like the ending is satisfying for the time being though so the cliffhanger didn't gut me too badly lol. If you're still on the fence as to whether to read it or not...just do it. You won't regret it.
