Piñata: A Novel

A Best Horror Book of the Year (Esquire)!

A Head Full of Ghosts meets Mexican Gothic in Piñata, a terrifying possession tale by author and artist Leopoldo Gout.

It was supposed to be the perfect summer.

Carmen Sanchez is back in Mexico, supervising the renovation of an ancient abbey. Her daughters Izel and Luna, too young to be left alone in New York, join her in what Carmen hopes is a chance for them to connect with their roots.

Then, an accident at the worksite unearths a stash of rare, centuries-old artifacts. The disaster costs Carmen her job, cutting the family trip short.

But something malevolent and unexplainable follows them home to New York, stalking the Sanchez family and heralding a coming catastrophe. And it may already be too late to escape what’s been awakened…

They were worshiped by our ancestors.
Now they are forgotten.
Soon, they’ll make us remember.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and Tor Publishing for the ARC copy of this book.

I loved this book! The Mexican mythology was so fascinating to learn about and the writing style and pace were perfect. The horror portrayed in this novel was excellent and I really think this book would make a great movie. I personally would love to see the visuals of the ancient demons come to life along with the cray body horror and possession described in the novel.

Overall a great story, compelling characters, and great horror made this a really great read.

A well written, horrifying horror story about the past and the atrocities of history. Gout has a lyrical way of writing that pulled me in and created some truly terrifying imagery, especially when paired with the audiobook which I greatly enjoyed. This novel would make a great horror movie and has so much to bring to the genre as well as to the topics of colonization, racism, misogyny, and heritage. Only reason this wasn’t a perfect read for me was the pacing. The novel is very slow, which is necessary because there are a lot of characters and background knowledge that needs to be established. Unfortunately because of this I could see some readers being turned off since the actual possession doesn’t occur until over 50% through the novel.
