Payback in Death: An Eve Dallas Novel (In Death, 57)

A retired colleague's suspicious death puts Lt. Eve Dallas on the case in Payback in Death, the electrifying new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb.

Lt. Eve Dallas is just home from a long overdue vacation when she responds to a call of an unattended death. The victim is Martin Greenleaf, retired Internal Affairs Captain. At first glance, the scene appears to be suicide, but the closer Eve examines the body, the more suspicious she becomes.

An unlocked open window, a loving wife and family, a too-perfect suicide note--Eve's gut says it's a homicide. After all, Greenleaf put a lot of dirty cops away during his forty-seven years in Internal Affairs. It could very well be payback--and she will not rest until the case is closed.

I've always been a fan of these books. I love these stories as audiobooks. The narrator is brilliant with character voices. Sometimes it feels like Eve Dallas' character is in a box and not allowed growth, but maybe that's just me.

I freaking love this series. Getting to see the ongoing relationships develop is something that you can't get from the stand alone books. This series has allowed us to see Eve develop into the woman she is. The crime in this book is a "suicide" of a retired IED officer. When she gets a call from Webster, she knows it is more than what it seems to be. Watching the case unfold, it got faster as you got further in, not quite what I expected. Loved this installment of the "In Death" series and cannot wait until the next.

JD Robb is one of my all time favorite authors. She is an auto-buy author for me. Lieutenant Eve Dallas always astounds me. She is so smart. I have read all 57 books. I now look forward to the banter between the different characters. I love that everyone is connected and Eve has made herself a family.I look forward to reading the new book soon.
