“Unflinching and realistic.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

From award-winning author Sharon Draper comes a story that will forever change how we all look at anyone with a disability, perfect for fans of RJ Palacio’s Wonder.

Eleven-year-old Melody is not like most people. She can’t walk. She can’t talk. She can’t write. All because she has cerebral palsy. But she also has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She’s the smartest kid in her whole school, but NO ONE knows it. Most people—her teachers, her doctors, her classmates—dismiss her as mentally challenged because she can’t tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by her disability. And she’s determined to let everyone know it…somehow.

Wonderful YA book about a fifth-grader with cerebral palsy who cannot walk or talk, who finds her voice through the help of some special people in her life and is finally able to express herself and let others know just how special she is.

Melody has Cerebral Palsy and this is her side of the story on her life. The ups and downs. The friendships and bullying. It gives a good perspective on how it feels to be different.

Sharon Draper is awesome. This is a great book for younger readers to almost literally get into the head of a child with a disability and gain understanding and compassion--without pity. Actually, it's a great book for adults to do the same, and it reminds us not to underestimate any person based on what we see on the outside.

I've had some difficulty rating this book. It's not the most well-written juvenile fiction story, but it is an important one with a message that everyone should receive and appreciate, and perhaps would be most enjoyed and beneficial to a younger audience of fourth to fifth graders for which the book was intended.

The beginning and the middle of the book were pretty good and you cannot help but to be endeared by Melody's intelligence, grit, and even her frustrations. But as we get towards the end there are two major plot events that seem a bit much (one would have sufficed) and sort of just crammed in, and the last few chapters feel a bit rushed and give a feeling that the author just wanted the book to be finished.

I was invested in the story and in the characters and found myself emotional over events that took place so I have given it four stars.
