I have a feeling my students are going to absolutely devour this one.
Me? I spent most of the book wanting to lovingly shake Cecily by the shoulders and ask if making one good decision would cause her physical pain.
The premise is fantastic: a wealthy magical family made a deal with the devil, someone starts knocking off family members one by one, there's a creepy masquerade ball, dark family secrets, morally gray characters, and a suspiciously attractive boy who may or may not be there to murder everyone. Basically, it's one giant supernatural family therapy session... except nobody believes in therapy.
The pacing is where this book shines. It moves fast enough that I kept turning pages because I genuinely wanted to know who was behind everything. The mystery kept me invested, and there were enough twists to keep me guessing.
Unfortunately, Cecily never won me over. She's the kind of main character who had me repeatedly thinking, "Girl... respectfully... what are we doing?" I never really connected with her, which made it hard to become emotionally invested even when the stakes kept climbing.
That said, I can absolutely see this becoming a favorite for teen fantasy readers. It has dark magic, dangerous family drama, betrayals, romance with plenty of tension, murder, secrets, and enough gothic atmosphere to keep the pages turning.
So while it wasn't quite my cup of enchanted tea, I completely understand why younger fantasy fans are going to eat this one up.
Sometimes a book isn't written for me... and that's okay. My students will probably fight over who gets to check it out first.
