Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning

AN INSTANT #1 BESTSELLER

A gripping first-hand account of the January 6th, 2021, insurrection from inside the halls of Congress, from origins to aftermath, as Donald Trump and his enablers betrayed the American people and the Constitution--by the House Republican leader who dared to stand up to it.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Liz Cheney, one of the few Republican officials to take a stand against these efforts, witnessed the attack first-hand, and then helped lead the Congressional Select Committee investigation into how it happened. In Oath and Honor, she tells the story of this perilous moment in our history, those who helped Trump spread the stolen election lie, those whose actions preserved our constitutional framework, and the risks we still face.

In a couple of words (for now): sobering and alarming.

This is a must read book for anyone interested in learning more about the events of January 6, and the actions of Congress and the President. It is the best memoir I’ve ever read and held my attention throughout. Even though I know what happened it was very insightful to read copies of memos and actual conversations that took place before and after Jan. 6. It is a thorough review of the evidence from the Congressional investigation. It’s too bad that those who really need to read this book, are unlikely to do so. I was surprised at how many of my elected representatives admitted that they did not even read information about Jan 6 investigation. Liz Cheney is an admirable woman and so many of her speeches reflect her love of the Constitution and her integrity to do the right thing.

It feels as if all the lessons learned and actions of the DJT term are distant memories now in 2024. This brought it all back. The re-telling of the testimonies of events leading up to and following the Jan 6th insurrection should be heard again. Because I fear history may repeat itself. Liz Chaney is to be admired for standing up and defending the Constitution. Too bad the people oh WY did not agree. Their loss.

This is expository nonfiction told as a memoir by Liz Cheney. It is written in three parts: pre 1/6, the uprising, and then the investigative commission. Frank and informative.
