Not Your Sidekick (1) (Sidekick Squad)

Welcome to Andover, where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship--only it turns out to be for the towns most heinous supervillain. On the upside, she gets to work with her longtime secret crush, Abby, whom Jess thinks may have a secret of her own. Then theres the budding attraction to her fellow intern, the mysterious "M," who never seems to be in the same place as Abby. But what starts as a fun way to spite her superhero parents takes a sudden and dangerous turn when she uncovers a plot larger than heroes and villains altogether.

But a strong 4 stars. Still putting my thoughts together. Basically, it is younger YA and very much in the superhero genre. It excels as a book in both those categories, but if you’re looking for adult science fiction devoid of any camp or theatrics, then you won’t enjoy this work. I had a blast reading this. Felt like a real friend group, family, etc. A fun sandbox to play in, with a good amount of emotion and human failings. It brings up great things like racism and tokenism; governmental control by the use of technology and by manipulating groups to be against each other; and how hard it is for sapphics to know when another girl is flirting. There are so many things that really ring true, as well as so many things that are only realistic in the world of caped crusaders.
