Nightshade: Sorrowsong University Book 1

I listened to Nightshade by Autumn Woods on audio, and it immediately gave me Nocticadia and Zodiac Academy vibes. Old money private university drama, a broody hot jerk MMC, and a heroine who shows up with a mission. I was in. Ophelia lands a scholarship at a prestigious Scottish university because she’s determined to prove that Cain Green, an American aviation tycoon, is responsible for her parents’ deaths. She plans to keep her grades up and her head down. That ends fast when the guy who almost kills her on day one turns out to be Cain’s son. Naturally. 🤔 What really hooked me is how quickly this goes from dark academic romance to “wait… are we literally each other’s alibi for a murder?” It just keeps escalating from there. The creepy room filled with hundreds of photos of Ophelia’s mom made my skin crawl. The slow reveal of what happened with Professor Bancroft, Cain, Sophia, and the helicopter crash had me chasing answers like it was my job. Let’s talk about Alex for a second. He starts as the beautiful-facade monster type, but then the story cracks him open, and he turns into this unexpectedly tender caretaker who is in therapy. Love to see it. The scene where he flies to Ophelia when he finds out she’s alone on Christmas, then bathes her while she talks through her feelings, was genuinely soothing in the middle of all the chaos. Also, the spice. It’s a slow burn that turns into very detailed heat, and the thigh scene lives rent-free in my brain. He talks her through it, and it is intensely hot. The audiobook made all of that even better because Eloise Thompson and Ben Holtzmuller do their own lines, no matter whose chapter it is. It’s so immersive. And yes, the Scottish accents are doing a lot of work for me. 🥵 My one real issue is the ending. I get that the cliffhanger is there to set up book two. After everything Alex and Ophelia go through, his immediate “jump to conclusions and disappear” reaction annoyed me. I expected more emotional maturity from him by that point. The bonus chapter from Alex’s POV was adorable, but I wish it had been placed closer to that moment in the story. Hearing it at the very end felt a little weird. Nightshade will absolutely hook you if you want dark academia romance, enemies-to-lovers tension, high-stakes family secrets, and a plot that keeps getting more morally gray until you’re staring at your headphones like “did that just happen?" After the cliffhanger, I’m just mildly side-eyeing whether I’m ready to commit to book two.

This book was so good!! Some twist and turns kept it pretty exciting! The semi cliffhanger had me feral trying to figure out how the heck it happened! 😳
