My Sweet Audrina is about a little girl who lives in the shadow of a her older sister - the first, best Audrina. It's a tale about lies, family, and trying to unravel the mysteries that constantly plague her everyday life. I could elaborate more on the story, but there is so much going on within the pages of this book that, really, you have to read it for yourself to get the full effect. I swear, though, each time I read this book it's a new experience. I think the last time I read it a few years ago I liked it a lot better than I did this time around. It's interesting how the passing of time and the changes that happen in life alter the way you view things. I still find this particular novel fascinating, but fascinating in quite a different way then I used to. This time around I got my hands on a first edition hardcover of the book. Complete with spelling errors and, at times, questionable readability that caused me to pause a few times and have to re-read to make sense of what I had just read. I don't remember that occurring in the previous paperbacks I've read so I'm wondering if it is just chalked up to the edition needing a re-read and edit.

Let's get one thing out of the way now. If you are in any way, shape, or form sensitive to certain subjects, this is not the book for you. I repeat, this is not the book for you. Contained in the pages of this book is material that will make you very, very unhappy. So if you are sensitive, stay away from this book.

Second, V.C. Andrews is NOT a good writer. I will fully admit that she can string a sentence together fine and weaves tales that could make any soap opera on television weep with envy. However, girl could not write dialogue at all. It's atrocious. Nobody talks like that to anyone. I love every second of it. This is the type of author whose work is so bad that it's good. Keep in mind, this is my opinion and I am in no way insulting Andrews when I say that. In fact, I love her writing (the books she actually did finish penning) for that very fact and will stand by that.

Third, her work is not for everyone. It's controversial. It can be upsetting. It goes into dark places.

That being said, a few years ago this book was a five for me. This re-read is a three. Different head space, different time, coming at this story from a different perspective, I guess. However, it has a nostalgia factor for me. I, along with a great many other women of a certain age, read her taboo books way sooner than we should have been allowed to. So I still love the book for a multitude of reasons, but I will still stand by my current rating.

Maybe next time my reading experience will be different!

Recommended for all you freaks out there (lovingly said as I am, too, freakish) that enjoy a good dose of taboo mixed with 'what the heck?'
