Jesse was a smart, likable narrator. I enjoyed learning more about Cherokee customs and culture from him (and through the obviously thorough research of the author!) His entries, especially those from others he encounters in the camp, were very powerful and helped me to understand the horrors experienced by the Cherokee before, during, and after the Trail of Tears. Some of the historical elements were not well incorporated into the entries, which sometimes made them hard to follow. But it definitely made me want to learn more about the Cherokee and other Native American peoples.
