Mother-Daughter Murder Night: A Novel

Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door.

A lighthearted whodunnit about a grandmother-mother-daughter trio of amateur sleuths. Think: Gilmore Girls, but with murder.

"Mother-Daughter Murder Night is the perfect mix of family drama and murder mystery." -- Kellye Garrett, award-winning author of Like a Sister

High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she's built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage--and hoping that boredom won't kill her before the cancer does.

Then Jack--tiny in stature but fiercely independent--happens upon a dead body while kayaking. She quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She'll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power.

With Jack and Beth's help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservationists and wealthy ranchers. But as their amateur snooping advances into ever-more dangerous territory, the headstrong Rubicon women must learn to do the one thing they've always resisted: depend on each other.

Fun and interesting mystery. I enjoyed the story of three generations and how all the women interacted. The stories about the sluce and kayaking on the waterways were cool too.

This novel was chosen by Reese Witherspoon for her Book Club. Sometimes her selections resonate with me, but other times, they miss the mark. One thing I always consider when I don't connect with her picks is whether they have the potential for adaptation into a movie.

My issue with this particular novel was simply that I couldn't engage with the characters.

The central theme of the book revolves around feeling invisible and unwanted.

The generational mother daughter dynamic kept throwing things into a different direction than I expected. I read the book in two days.

Read this shortly after my grandma listened to the audiobook and said I needed to give this a read. I really adored the characters, particularly Lana and the relationship the 3 generations of women had. I found myself really engaged with this story and felt it was a quick and easy read. Would love to see more with these characters in the future if Ms. Simon (and her mom) decided to write another. 4 ⭐️

(7.8/10 rating)… “Who done it” type while navigating mother daughter relationships. It was okay. I think the author did a great job at portraying the mother daughter relationship and the grandmother and mother relationship. 3 generations of woman trying to solve a murder which created a tighter bond between all 3.
