Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

From the renowned psychologist who introduced the world to "growth mindset" comes this updated edition of the million-copy bestseller--featuring transformative insights into redefining success, building lifelong resilience, and supercharging self-improvement.

"Through clever research studies and engaging writing, Dweck illuminates how our beliefs about our capabilities exert tremendous influence on how we learn and which paths we take in life."--Bill Gates, GatesNotes

"It's not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest."

After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset--those who believe that abilities are fixed--are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset--those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment.

In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love--to transform their lives and your own.

Most of the book was common sense, but the examples of famous people of a fixed mindset and ones of a growth mindset were interesting.

This is a powerful view of human motivation, with lots of examples, both from research and personal anecdotes to convey the points made. Essentially a description of how a fixed mindset (thinking ability/traits/skills are static) and a growth mindset (thinking that effort and persistence will increase ability/skills and affect traits positively) can create incredibly different experiences. The growth mindset is applied to school, business, sports, relationships and parenting - all with pretty powerful examples. Kind of makes me wish I could ask for a do over with my kids (family and students)!

I learned the same thing from one chapter in [b:NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children|6496815|NurtureShock New Thinking About Children|Po Bronson|https:images.gr-assets.com/books/1442285268s/6496815.jpg|6688299]. The message is important but this book just belabors that one point that our abilities are not fixed based on inborn talent, but must be cultivated through hard work and determination.

Also, despite Dweck's example in Chapter 8, stress doesn't cause ulcers. A bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) usually causes ulcers though you can also get it from taking too many painkillers, alcohol or cigarettes.
