A Midnight Dance
Author: Joanna Davidson Politano
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My Review:
Soft and beautiful, elegant and lyrical in its writing, this novel felt almost like a beloved classic come to life. I absolutely adored the gentle, dreamlike flow of this story, set against the luminous and enchanting world of Victorian ballet. Every page felt delicate and atmospheric, wrapped in music, candlelight, hidden corridors, and the quiet ache of longing.
I’ve always been awestruck by the world of ballet, and theater itself has always seemed so magical to me. This story captured so much of that wonder and beauty while weaving in subtle ghostly undertones that made it feel even more haunting and mesmerizing. Mystery and romance dance together perfectly throughout this evocative story, and there’s a quiet sense of intrigue lingering beneath the surface from the very beginning that completely drew me in.
Set within a prestigious ballet theater filled with whispered secrets and lingering shadows of the past, the story follows Ella, a young ballerina searching not only for truth, but also for where she truly belongs. The mystery unfolds with such grace and restraint, allowing the emotion and atmosphere to shine just as brightly as the plot itself.
And perhaps that longing for belonging is part of why this story touched me so deeply. As both an adoptee and an adoptive mama, I know the ache of wondering where you came from and the deep desire to feel fully known and loved. To be enough. That thread running through Ella’s story felt incredibly personal to me and made this book all the more emotional and meaningful.
I also deeply appreciated Joanna Davidson Politano’s gentle leanings into faith and scripture throughout the story. Never heavy-handed, but woven so naturally and beautifully into the narrative, adding even more depth, hope, and tenderness to an already moving story.
Joanna Davidson Politano writes in a way that feels timeless and immersive, drawing you so gently into her characters’ hearts that you can’t help but feel everything alongside them. Quietly magical, emotional, haunting, and utterly captivating, this story completely stole my heart. Without question, this has become a new favorite of mine and one I know I’ll be thinking about for a very long time. 😍
