Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore: A Novel

When a bookshop patron dies by suicide, his favorite store clerk must unravel the puzzle he left behind in this "shocking, charming, thrilling" (Associated Press) and award-winning debut novel.

Lydia Smith lives her life hiding in plain sight. A clerk at the Bright Ideas bookstore, she leads a meticulously ordered existence among her beloved books, eccentric colleagues, and the BookFrogs--the lost and lonely regulars who spend every day browsing the overwhelmed stacks.

But when a young BookFrog, Joey Molina, hangs himself in one of the upper rooms of the store, Lydia's life comes unglued. Inside one of Joey's pockets is a photograph of Lydia as a little girl. And when she flips through some of his books, she finds them defaced in ways both disturbing and inexplicable. They reveal the psyche of a young man on the verge of an emotional reckoning. The more she puzzles over them, the more they seem to contain a hidden message for her about his final days. What did Joey know? And what does it have to do with Lydia?

With "oddball characters and [a] layered plot" (Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review), Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore is "a smart, twisty crime novel set in a world that booklovers will adore" (Jess Walter, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Ruins).

Little Lydia. Our main character was the sole witness to a family’s murder when she was ten, and many years later, she finds an ex-com patron hanged in the bookstore where she works. Strange occurrences, and things get stranger as she tries to figure out why her ‘friend’ Joey killed himself. The twists in this one were suspenseful without being scary. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. Very enjoyable audiobook!!

A sad haunting novel about secrets and those that bear them. I found Joey and Lydia to be such engaging characters. I wanted to rush over to my local book shop and look for them myself. Joey was an observer of other people. He longed to participate in life and mingle with others, but in a way, he didn’t know how. He was forever a lost boy. Lydia was tormented by her childhood. She narrowly escaped death herself, and her father continued to protect her in the decades that followed. Her wounds never fully scarred over, and she continued in her safe and haunted existence. Two damaged lives connected in ways they never realized...

This book is well-written and thoughtfully constructed, and I’ll be looking for more by this author. I found this moving story twisted and yet simple at the same time.

Well written. Kept me on the edge of my seat. It is a mystery, but the death scene in chapter 1 when Lydia goes upstairs to look for Joey was very detailed. . . it put me in a room I never want to be in.
