Well dern. I tip my hat to you Larry McMurty. I just read almost a thousand pages of a cattle drive, in the late 1800's, from Texas to Montana and was completely moved.

This is an American story. A true western that captures a slice of this time period via a crew of unforgettable characters.

What surprised me the most about this story is how visceral it all felt. I could taste dust, feel thirsty, cold, scared. But also how complex these seemingly simple characters all were. I spent a fair amount of time thinking about Call for example. And trying to figure him out. And getting frustrated with him.

And Lorena. And how multiple characters played out in her orbit...

This book moves at its own pace. Settle in and slow down. Appreciate the details and set-up. Once you get going you will forget what time period you are living in and be saddled up in a sandstorm.
