Bailey Rae wants to honor her aunt Winnie, chase her Myrtle Beach food truck fantasy, and also unravel fifty years’ worth of trauma, survival, and female friendship—all while deciphering cookbook codes. I mean… that’s a lot of heavy lifting for one narrative. And instead of depth, I mostly got repetition, melodrama, and characters delivering wisdom like they were auditioning for a Hallmark Channel Original: Southern Secrets Edition.
Don’t get me wrong—it means well. The themes of survival and sisterhood are heartfelt, and the message is important. But the execution? Imagine lightning in a jar… except instead of lightning, it’s a flickering nightlight that keeps shorting out.
So yes, it’s sweet and earnest, but somewhere between “profound secrets” and “cookbook codes,” I lost the thread (and some patience). While it wasn’t for me, I can already picture the book club discussion snacks being fabulous.
