I started the expanse series in 2012. I head heard all the good reviews and recommendations about Leviathan Wakes and decided to give the series a try. At that time, I was on a Sci Fi dry spell, I just hadn't found any Sci Fi I could really sink into in a while. So I was a bit skeptical, but I needed a light summer read that I could bring along on our yearly boundary waters canoe trip.
I was immediately hooked and the expanse became one of my favorite series. It joined the very short list of series where whenever a new book comes out, I reread the entire series.
And as I approached this final book in the series, I was frankly worried. First, I didn't want this story to end. Second, I didn't think they would be able to end this series with the grace and honor it deserves. I'm happy that I was mostly wrong. I was sad indeed sad to see this story end. I cried. I actually cried quite a bit reading his book. There were at least three time I had to put the book down and stop because the passage I had just read got to me so deeply. Given, it's the ninth book in a series filled with characters you will develop attachments to. But even knowing that, even knowing that if the book had been a page long and simply said "they all lived happily ever after" I would have cried, the authors found a way to make this ending meaningful and honored the characters and their development over the series. It was a good ending. I think it might have been the best ending to any scifi/fantasy series that I've ever read. Given that it's the ninth book in the series, there's not much to say in the way of a review. If you made it this far, you know what you're in for. It was an amazingly good series with a satisfying ending and so many thing came full circle. From the very title of the book itself or so many of the character arcs. This series will sit on my shelf in completion, and I know beyond any doubt that I will pick it up again and read it all the way through again someday.
