Kiss of the Basilisk (Standard Edition): A Split or Swallow Novel (Split or Swallow, 1)

From internet sensation Lindsay Straube comes the first in a searing romantasy series where survival demands submission, and desire is the most dangerous game of all.

Temperance Verus has never been kissed--not exactly ideal for a girl competing in the palace's most closely watched matchmaking ritual. Every year, a select group is invited to bond with the realm's magical basilisks and train in the art of charm, poise, and influence. The prize? A chance to win the prince's favor--and a life of privilege.

Tem expects rules, gowns, and etiquette.

She doesn't expect her assigned partner to be Caspen--the Serpent King, commanding, mysterious, and anything but safe. As he pushes her to unlock the strength she never knew she had, Tem finds herself drawn into something deeper, stranger, and far more powerful than royal approval.

But not all bonds are built for the court, and some secrets are meant to break them.

Readers call it "feral, spicy, and unforgettably bold." For fans of morally grey monsters, slow-burn fantasy romance, and stories that subvert the fairytale script.

I've heard much about this book, so I couldn't resist trying it. The story revolves around a unique and captivating premise: a basilisk who teaches the arts of seduction and intimacy. This unusual instructor trains a student to prepare her to compete for the affections of a human prince. The narrative suggests a blend of fantasy and romance, highlighting themes of ambition and the unconventional paths one might take to achieve their desires. While this journey may not appeal to everyone, the protagonist is determined to embrace it fully. It is quite unhinged. Despite this, I enjoyed it. I wanted to see how Tem evolved into a confident woman, discovering her preferences and understanding the power of sexuality. It was also interesting to see Caspen, our basilisk, learn more about his emotions and allow himself to be vulnerable with someone he chooses to love. As for Leo, the human prince, I could take him or leave him. I felt sympathy for his troubled past and the horrific treatment he endured at the hands of his father, all in the name of tradition and maintaining control over the kingdom. His lack of agency in certain aspects of his life was striking. The spice level in this book is high. Given that part of the storyline involves Tem being taught by Caspen how to please Leo, readers should expect plenty of steamy scenes. This may not be your book if you’re not into excessive spice. Overall, it was a good read. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy with a lot of spice and a touch of the unconventional.

I spent quite a lot of the time I was reading asking myself and my book club, who picked this as the read of the month, what in the world we got ourselves into. My reactions and gasps caused my family to ask what I was reading and what was happening and as I explained they became just as invested as I. They were just as entertained as I was by the unhinged things that occurred and wanted to know what would happen next. It was like watching a car crash. I couldn’t look away 😂 This is not a read for the faint of heart and I can’t say I’m a fan of Tem but it was definitely unique and unforgettable. The book club discussion was so much fun ☠️
