The overall tone of the book I can only describe as 'grim', but that felt entirely appropriate to me. The writing, each sentence, is excellent. I found it gripping, though dark.
The devastation and loss of the scenario, which I'm guessing is roughly 500 years in the future in a climate-failure scenario, feels scientifically accurate to me from everything I've read. The collapse and evolution of democratic structures and historical knowledge was fascinating and plausible.
I feel like the book articulated one of many potential future scenarios, and I hope that how grim it is motivates people to take political action now so that we collectively avoid that path!
I have been over exposed to this type of apocalyptic futurism. It tends to have a sameness about it. The logistics of the vigilante sorties drag in the middle but the last quarter really bought it home. Good but not his greatest work.
