Jackaby

This thrilling novel from the author of the New York Times bestselling paranormal mystery Jackaby series pits R.F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplainable and his new assistant, Abigail Rook, against a supernatural serial killer.

Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary--including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby's assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it's an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain the foul deeds are the work of the kind of creature whose very existence the local authorities--with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane--seem adamant to deny.

Quirky
The characters in this story, Abigail Rook and Mr. Jackaby, lean heavily on the quirky side. Abigail stands out from the culture of the time period in which this book is written as she is strong, stubborn, and independent. Mr. Jackaby is just quirky in general. He rivals Mr. Sherlock Holmes in this regard, and it really enhances the narrative of the story.

Explore the World
I really enjoyed the world building in this book. It was implemented well into the historical setting and utilized well in regards to the plot. Most of all, it was fun to read about and explore. Though, I would have liked a little bit more explanation of the world and its going ons, but perhaps there will be more in the sequel.

Predictable, but Cute
Some people have said they were bored by this book because the mystery wasn’t that hard to solve and it was easy to unravel all the secrets the book had. I would agree. The mystery wasn’t very profound. The bad character was easy to figure out, but I was more interested in the interactions and world building of the story than the actual mystery. So, it didn’t bother me. I still found this story to be quite cute.

Imagine Louisa May Alcot's Jo March and NBC's Columbo blended with the Grimm television series - all set in New England, 1892.

Filled with lovable, quirky characters, loads of intrigue, chills, and humor, I enjoyed this fun, fast read.
It's out of the ordinary, entertaining and a perfect change of pace for escaping and sparking up the joys of reading. Above all, don't stare at the frog! I'm truly looking forward to the other books in this YA series.

I love this cover.

Jackaby has been on my TBR pile for AGES. I love historical paranormal and add in the "Sherlock" aspect and I was SOLD. When I saw it available on audio at the library, I was extremely excited to dive into this world! And the wait was totally worth it.

I love the characters. Jackaby is so fun and eccentric! I love his take on the world and all that he sees. Abigail was a fun character, as well. I love how adventurous she is and how she took her dreams and life into her own hands. The two together are fun and hilarious. They work well together and Abigail's logical way of thinking goes well with Jackaby's less than conventional ways.

The murder mystery was written very well - I had no clue who it was, or the whys. This is the book sole focus and I loved that I had no distractions. Ritter also mixes many different myths and paranormal creatures and I loved it!

The Narrator:

This was my first listen with Nicola Barber and I adored it! She does well with all the accents, which is hard to find (hear?) with audios. Her voice doesn't sound too old for Abigail either which is a HUGE plus. To sum up - she nailed it.

Overall - I quite enjoyed Jackaby! I am excited for the sequel and where Ritter will take us next!
