I do respect Armstrong as an athlete and even more so after reading this brief snippet of his enormous life. The title is very true; he spends some time on his Tour De France win while choosing to focus his efforts on his battle with cancer.

This book is an eye opener for me. I had always assumed that he came from money and his battle with cancer was just a bump in the road compared to winning 7 Tour De Frances. I was wrong. This man went through hell and back to get to where is today, not only physically but financially too. He does detail his several months of cancer treatment along with details about some of his races. He gives a good background on how he started biking to becoming a member on the US Postal team.

He also dedicates much of the book to his relationships with his mother and his wife at the time. It was great to hear about how such a celebrated athlete has a strong bond with his mother.

However (this book was published in 2000), the words written about his wife felt hollow knowing that they are divorced now. I am sure at the time he meant those words but knowing that he went on to several relationships afterward left me feeling that he wrote about his relationship with her to paint a better picture of himself. If I had read this when it was new and they were still together I am sure I wouldn’t feel that way.

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about how Armstrong became the man he is today. Also, any one affected by cancer could pick up a lot of great motivation in their battle. But if you want a detailed book on how to become a better cyclist then this book would not be for you.
