The writer Jeffrey Lent wrote the novel In the Fall, a family epic that spans the period between the American Civil War and the end of Prohibition, following the passage of the 21st Amendment in 1933 (Rorabaugh 5, 104-107). The novel takes place in the American states of Vermont, Virginia, New Hampshire, and North Carolina. The title of the book may come from the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible (Rugnetta 2017). The book revolves around the complexity of sexual relationships in the Antebellum American South until the United States during Prohibition. I think the biblical reference to Adam and Eve may stem from the fact that many of the significant characters commit a violent act during the novel that shapes the rest of their lives, much like the actions of Adam and Eve affected humanity in the Bible. Another reference to the biblical garden may be because places in the novel are essential. Lent is very skilled at describing places in his book, In the Fall. The title also may refer to Autumn. A large portion of the novel takes place during the autumn season. Lent is very skilled at describing weather and seasons in the novel "In the Fall." Jeffrey Lent, in his book In the Fall, has a beautiful writing style. Works Cited: Rorabaugh, W.J. 2020. Prohibition: A Very Short Introduction. New York: Oxford University Press. Kindle.
