A Stonewall Honor Book · A New York Times and Indie bestseller!
“A big-hearted, deeply vulnerable, love-bubbly tumble through self-discovery.” — Casey McQuiston, author of #1 New York Times bestselling I Kissed Shara Wheeler
With humor and insight, #1 New York Times bestseller Becky Albertalli explores the nuances of sexuality, identity, and friendship in this timely new novel.
Imogen Scott may be hopelessly heterosexual, but she’s got the World’s Greatest Ally title locked down.
She's never missed a Pride Alliance meeting. She knows more about queer media discourse than her very queer little sister. She even has two queer best friends. There's Gretchen, a fellow high school senior, who helps keep Imogen's biases in check. And then there's Lili—newly out and newly thriving with a cool new squad of queer college friends.
Imogen's thrilled for Lili. Any ally would be. And now that she's finally visiting Lili on campus, she's bringing her ally A game. Any support Lili needs, Imogen's all in.
Even if that means bending the truth, just a little.
Like when Lili drops a tiny queer bombshell: she's told all her college friends that Imogen and Lili used to date. And none of them know that Imogen is a raging hetero—not even Lili’s best friend, Tessa.
Of course, the more time Imogen spends with chaotic, freckle-faced Tessa, the more she starts to wonder if her truth was ever all that straight to begin with. . .

If you saw my updates while reading, I really hated Gretchen. She was the turd in the punch bowl for me, so despite how cute and sweet the rest of the story was, Gretchen just ruined every warm fuzzy feeling I had while reading.
I highly doubt Becky Albertalli meant to write a sociopath, mentally abusive teen when she wrote Gretchen, but she did. Gretchen is a bully and a mean girl. She's the worst type of "friend" who is constantly gaslighting the people around her. Thank god Lili could see through her bullshit. If you deviate from the path Gretchen has put down for you, she will attack then play innocent and act like you're the one at fault.
After the huge fight with Edith, she acted like nothing was wrong when she was talking to the dad (Sociopath behavior...)
After the huge fight with Imogen her first attempt at an apology was "Sorry you were upset" not "sorry I'm queer gatekeeping and clearly need to go into therapy for my emotional issues."
I guess the author wanted to show all types of teens navigating being queer, but why WHY did she have to make one of Imogen's best friends the angry, gatekeeping queer? Even at the end when the author explicitly stated the traumatic, homophobic events Gretchen's has had the endure, she immediately undermines any compassion I had by having Gretchen spew more patronizing "you're not queer" BS to Imogen. I'm getting angry again just writing this review.
I am so glad the character I disliked from chapter 1 ended up being the character to dislike too! I was nervous for a minute there!
I loved the sausages, the tit-course, the closet moment, and so much more. There was lots of humor and so much heart in this book!
I devoured this audiobook in 2 days, listening at every chance I could get.
I loved this book! Obviously.
