This is actually a fear of mine - not being able to look at people. I don't look in eyes as it is, but that is of free will - not because I can't.
This story reminds me of the Matrix. However there is no one there for them to let them know they don't have to live in the world that they where told they had to live in. They had to learn for themselves about the consequences, whether good or bad, should they rebel to see if they still had to live the way they where told they had to.
