Ultimately I would rate this about 2.5 stars using Goodreads' meter of 'it was ok' and 'liked it'. I requested this book because I found the premise to be intriguing. Entering a XXX reality tv show in order to win it after her brother lost in the final was an interesting idea, but I didn't think there was much conflict to carry this story through. Perhaps my expectations were somewhat misguided based on the fact that this was listed as a 'romance' but yields to none of the standard romance conventions (and yes, I've read LGBTQ romances involving multiple partners in the past).

I wasn't sure quite sure what motivated Helen to pursue going on the reality TV show, though I can guess from her not fitting in on the basis of her bisexuality and aromantic identities. The novella focuses entirely on Helen as she goes through whatever antics happened on the reality TV show, but I wish there had been more context given about the show, how it operated, what the prize would be for the winner of the show. Perhaps this would've shed more light on why Helen was so intent on doing the show, why did she even want to follow in her brother's footsteps (I thought it might be because he lost and she felt it was a grave injustice and was going to expose some kind of corruption or plot against him... clearly, my imagination was running wild). Instead, the story is centered squarely on Helen's journey throughout, the different training she endures to prove she has what it takes to be part of the porn industry and the encounters she has with the staff of the show, judges included. There just wasn't strong enough conflict throughout the story especially because it seemed as if Helen was actually a frontrunner for the show who glided through to the final. Even the objections her family had to her participation were only touched on and not explored further--which I saw as a lost opportunity to explore the challenge of being accepted for oneself even among those closest to a character.

In the end, this was a really quick and easy read with some warmly heated moments. The pacing was fast, the writing was clean, the voice was largely introspective and I felt there could have been a lot more explored in this book given the circumstances.

Overall: I wish this was fleshed out more and delved deeper than it did.

Ramit writes detailed advice (even name-dropping brands and institutions), which I appreciated at the start of my personal finance journey.
