Synopsis:
Ten years after her daughter Melanie’s murder, Bree Winter is finally beginning to rebuild her life. But when the man convicted of the crime makes a startling deathbed confession—admitting to killing four girls while insisting Melanie wasn’t one of them—Bree’s hard-won peace falls apart.
At first, Bree and her ex-husband refuse to believe him. Then troubling inconsistencies in the investigation begin to surface, forcing Bree to return to the upstate New York town where Melanie died. Determined to uncover the truth, she starts digging into her daughter’s past and discovers that Melanie may have been keeping secrets of her own.
With the real killer possibly still nearby, Bree must question everything she thought she knew about the crime, her daughter, and the people closest to them. Her search for justice was supposed to bring the nightmare to an end—but it may have only just begun.
Review:
Told exclusively from Bree’s point of view, the narrative follows her deeply personal journey through grief, love, and betrayal. This perspective works well because the heart of the story lies in her emotional experience.
The subject matter feels well researched, and the writing is strong. The characters are fully developed, and the author incorporates diversity naturally and realistically.
However, the mystery surrounding the killer’s identity often feels secondary to Bree’s emotional journey. As a result, this reads more like women’s fiction with a mystery element than a true thriller. How much you enjoy it may depend on whether you prefer character-driven stories or suspenseful mysteries, because the whodunit occasionally gets lost beneath the emotional weight of the story.
For a thriller, this book was just decent. It had a pretty good twist, but the writing wasn't the best and the dialogue felt very disjointed and unnatural. I found myself interested in the mystery story, but not really at all invested in the romantic side-plot.
