Octavia and Bacon prequel

Powerful necromancer, Octavia Hallows, arrives in a hidden and magical town and immediately finds trouble. Given a probationary stay and a job at a butcher shop, all she needs to do is control her magic for 3 months. The dead guy in the freezer throws it all into chaos instead, especially when she accidentally brings a pig back to life. The truth about the dead guy, however, leads her on her quest to find the missing body of her deceased fiance, Elba.

Having read the first six Journals of Octavia Hallows, I really enjoyed this prequel story, which explains the existence of her undead sidekick, Bacon, and her search for Elba. Octavia is a strong heroine with a boatload of trauma. Her relationship with Elba gave her much needed acceptance and his death nearly crushed her. The mystery surrounding Willie, the dead guy in the freezer, is nicely written with a neat twist that gives her some closure around Elba's accident as well as the impetus to search for him. The town of Havenwood Falls and its supernatural community is interesting and I'm interested in reading more in this multi author shared world. Addie, Melanie, and especially Octavia's boss, Guy, were all fun characters, and I'm intrigued about the mystery surrounding The Collector.
