Horus Rising: The Horus Heresy, Book 1

I was expecting the usual glorification of war, and the extolling of empire that so often comes with these kinds of books. It was a pleasant surprise to find that it was all a little more complicated than that. It did take me forever to warm to Horus, but I liked Garviel almost immediately. All in, an enjoyable read. Not ground-breaking or heart wrenching, but enjoyable enough that I would like to continue to read the series.
