Okay, to be honest I am still reading the other stories in this anthology. The four stars is for the Dali and Jim story by Ilona Andrews.
The story, Magic Dreams, is told from Dali's perspective. I really liked Dali's voice here. It was funny, quirky and full of emotion. I also liked the fact that the very geeky Dali had to save the very Alpha and tough Jim.
As I have come to expect with any of Ilona Andrews writing, the dialog here was sharp and funny. It was also very in tune with the characters. I can just see Ilona and Gordon talking out the dialog so that it is just right. For example, this exchange occurred when Jim and Dali are going into a house full of bad magic.
"You want me to go back into that house protected by a magic sticky note?"
"Don't even start, it's working. If it weren't working, you couldn't drag me into that place."
"What did you write on here? 'Don't die'?"
"No, I wrote, 'Don't be an a-hole!'"
"On yours or mine?"
"On yours"
"Well, in that case, your magic isn't working. I'm still an asshole."
Priceless. It was a good thing I was at home when I read that as I choked on my tea.
This was an excellent addition to the Kate Daniels World. I look forward to the next installment.
I will also add to this review when I finish reading the other stories.
Added late 6/7/11:
I found myself skipping through the other stories in this anthology. I didn't care for the second story, Ice Shards, by Yasmiine Galenorn. I think that even though this was a trip of self discovery for the lead character, her boyfriend (the reason for doing this) was absent. I would have liked to seen their interaction and his support of her.
The remaining stories by Allyson James and Jeanne Stein left me feeling like I had missed too much back story by not reading their earlier novels. I think I will go back an reread these stories at a later date and hopefully enjoy them more.
