A Halloween hookup with a blue alien warrior sounds like a wild time, but I was not prepared for just how bizarre this extraterrestrial romance would become. Two penises?! A pleasure cock?! I have so many questions and I am not sure I want the answers.
Haunted by the Alien by Julie K. Cohen follows a curvy human woman whose Halloween festivities take an unexpected turn after she meets a towering and tattooed stranger with blue skin and horns. What initially appears to be an elaborate costume turns out to be the real deal. Their attraction quickly develops into a dangerous encounter involving alien enemies, a military mission, and a warrior who must choose between duty and the woman he claimed as his own.
The relationship contrasts his immediate devotion and her hesitation to surrender to their growing attraction. Unfortunately, the possessive language did little to make their romance appealing. His repeated references to her as "his female" felt more degrading than romantic. The reveal that she was a virgin added another trope I rarely enjoy.
Then we get to the alien anatomy. Apparently, our extraterrestrial hero has two penises. Including one specifically designated for pleasure. I can appreciate some imaginative anatomy in a science fiction romance, but the repeated use of "pleasure cock" had me cringing rather than swooning. The explicit scenes were certainly unconventional, but their terminology and descriptions made the intimacy more awkward than enticing.
I can appreciate the creativity of this story, but the combination of awkward dialogue, unappealing tropes, and bizarre sexual descriptions made this a miss for my reading tastes. I came for a spooky alien romance and left wondering why anyone needed a separate pleasure penis. The final declaration of love was a particularly cringeworthy moment and the additional epilogue felt unnecessary.
Pick up Haunted by the Alien if you enjoy possessive alien warriors, fated mates, unusual anatomy, and unapologetically outrageous extraterrestrial smut.
