Hallowed: An Unearthly Novel

By Cynthia Hand

In the second book of this riveting angel series, Clara is haunted by a new vision—one that could signify the end for someone close to her. Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare and Stephanie Garber. For months, part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the forest fire from her visions and save Christian Prescott. But nothing prepared her for the fateful choice she was forced to make that day—or the unsettling revelation that her purpose isn't as simple as she thought. Now torn between her growing feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara is pulled deeper into the hidden world of part angels and the escalating war between White Wings and Black Wings. Worse, a devastating new vision reveals a terrifying truth: someone close to her will die within months. With her future more uncertain than ever, one thing is clear—the fire was only the beginning. - Love Triangle: Clara's feelings for both Christian and Tucker deepen just as the stakes rise, forcing impossible choices between duty and desire. - Expanding Mythology: The battle lines between White Wings and Black Wings sharpen, pulling Clara deeper into a war bigger than herself. - Emotional, Character-Driven Sequel: A heart-wrenching follow-up that balances the all-consuming joy of first love with the agony of loss. - Fated Purpose vs. Free Will: Clara's "task" is no longer straightforward—she must decide how much of her destiny she's willing to accept.

OH BOY.

That was just...whoa. I was really just like...wow. And then I felt very much like...noooooooooooooooooo!! (Sprinkle Kindle with tears. Multiple times.)

It is so hard to talk about this one without spoiling anything, so I'm going to keep it short. There are so many unexpected elements to this one. There was one small part about Clara's brother that I was annoyed about and thinking, "Oh, that's so predictable" and it was but then...it wasn't (completely). And that made me love the book that much more because even though this isn't some mystery thriller, there are still all these twists and turns and curveballs being thrown at me that I really appreciate.

There is one excerpt that really struck me:
The field where Samjeeza stands is full of sunshine, but he can't absorb its warmth. He can't smell the new grass at his feet, the fresh rain from this morning's spring shower. He can't feel the breeze. All of that is beauty, and it belongs to the light. Not to him.

Wowza. It was that moment that I really understood the Black Wings. It is hard to picture characters that I haven't seen - in life or in movies - but this really sealed it for me. This really explained this sorrow that Clara goes on and on about (I mean that in the most loving way possible).

I can't wait to start the third book. I'm also a bit afraid to start it because I don't want this to end. Why are the best series so short? :(
