Girl in Pieces

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"A haunting, beautiful, and necessary book."Nicola Yoon, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything, Everything

Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At seventeen she’s already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she’s learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don’t have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you.

Every new scar hardens Charlie’s heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

A deeply moving portrait of a girl in a world that owes her nothing, and has taken so much, and the journey she undergoes to put herself back together. Kathleen Glasgow's debut is heartbreakingly real and unflinchingly honest. It’s a story you won’t be able to look away from.

And don’t miss Kathleen Glasgow's novels You’d Be Home Now and How to Make Friends with the Dark, both raw and powerful stories of life.

I know it isn't supposed to be an easy read but, it was really gritty and it did not skip out on detail. Working with teens and knowing that this kind of self harm is on the rise really hit close to home. It is definitely for a high school teen reading age and up. In the era of "Thirteen Reasons Why" and how some are reacting to it, this book would fall in that category, it may be best to have a conversation after reading the book with your teen.

darker themes of self harm and abandonment, great writing style but can be triggering. toxic romance and if you rely on happy relationship endings it won’t be satisfying

This is not the typical book I read. 1) It is YA. 2) The subject matter is not something I gravitate too. However, I really enjoyed this book. This is a debut novel from Kathleen Glasgow about a girl, 17 year old Charlie Davis, who self harms. Charlie has been homeless, in the hospital, a treatment center and even lived in a sex trade house for a while. Charlie tries to make a new life for herself in Phoenix when she is released from a treatment center in MN. She often has to rely on the advice her counselor gave her-just breathe. This story is filled with emotion. Charlie struggles with her own self worth and identity. I felt so much heartache for Charlie but also hope. This is a survival story, both physical and emotional. I was rooting for Charlie. She was figuring out how to set herself free from her past and move forward. For her, that was through her art, specifically drawing. This is a beautifully written, intense story about many serious issues (self harm, suicide, homelessness, drug use). Although I really enjoyed this story, it might be difficult to read for someone who struggles with self harm or knows someone who struggles.
