Fear the Flames: A Novel

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • An exiled princess teams up with the last man she thought she could trust in the start of a dazzling and unforgettable epic fantasy romance series.
As a child, Elowen Atarah was ripped away from her dragons and imprisoned by her father, King Garrick of Imirath. Years later, Elowen is now a woman determined to free her dragons. Having established a secret kingdom of her own called Aestilian, she’s ready to do what’s necessary to save her people and seek vengeance. Even if that means having to align herself with the Commander of Vareveth, Cayden Veles, the most feared and dangerous man in all the kingdoms of Ravaryn.
Cayden is ruthless, lethal, and secretive, promising to help Elowen if she will stand with him and all of Vareveth in the pending war against Imirath. Despite their contrasting motives, Elowen can’t ignore their undeniable attraction as they combine their efforts and plot to infiltrate the impenetrable castle of Imirath to steal back her dragons and seek revenge on their common enemy.
As the world tries to keep them apart, the pull between Elowen and Cayden becomes impossible to resist. Working together with their crew over clandestine schemes, the threat of war looms, making the imminent heist to free her dragons their most dangerous adventure yet. But for Elowen, her vengeance is a promise signed in blood, and she’ll stop at nothing to see that promise through.
An immersive fantasy filled with a sizzling reluctant-allies-to-lovers romance, a world to get lost in, dangerous quests, dragon bonds, and an entertaining band of characters to root for, Fear the Flames marks the stunning debut of Olivia Rose Darling.

I loved this book! I’m glad this is a 4-book series, because I’m definitely into Elowen’s and Cayden’s story. I usually read books that end of having a lot of tension that kind of takes my breath away. This was a nice departure from that but without sacrificing the quality of story or the characters. I’m anxiously awaiting the next part of their story when Wrath of the Dragons comes out in July!
I absolutely fucking loved this book and these characters. The writing is so gorgeous and just pure poetry so many times. The female and male main characters are amazing. The side characters are my new family. The banter is top freaking shelf. The physical chemistry is off the charts and spice is HOT AF 🔥. Touch her and die, bitches. Found family we would die for. And, of course, dragons.
Elowen is immediately in my top FMCs of all time and I am in love with the writer’s portrayal of her. She is driven and ambitious, and unapologetically so. She is mentally sharp and physically strong and a fierce fighting force. But she also has realistic anxiety and trauma from her abusive upbringing that felt so real and realistic. But, to quote our favorite adoptive brother Finnian, “She is strong. She can be strong and have anxiety. She’s not made of stone.” She is out for blood and vengeance for her abuse and she refuses to let others tell her she should just get over it and is overreacting. As said by Elowen herself, “I’m the woman forged from the bars I melted in my mind and welded into blades.” She blows up the box people so often try to put women in and I fucking love it.
The only reason I have this book at 4.75 ⭐️ on Fable / 9 ⭐️ here is because some of the mechanics at the end got a little muddled. I wish more of the world was built out but that could be something that is built upon in later books so we shall see! Overall I cannot wait for the next book and I can’t wait to watch Elowen continue to fuck shit up.
This book definitely kept my attention! I am looking forward to the second book being released summer 2025. Good story with some twists at the end. Would definitely recommend!
This was an amazing read. It gave me all the “Game of Thrones” meets dragon rider. It is a slow burn and has some repetitive sections. It wasn’t into about 60% into the book that I couldn’t put it down and it went from 3 stars to 4 stars. I think this book is underrated. It is not a spicy book, at least for my standard. I read this as an audio and I think the actress did an amazing job doing this book’s voiceover. I actually listened to this book at 1x speed which is not my usual speed. She has a heavy Scottish accent and it doesn’t bother me at all. It gave me Ygritte and Jon Snow vibes although the story is more written as Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow. Having it at the 1x speed have it that extra sensual burn between the two of them. My favorite line , “sit on your throne”. IYKYK. I would love to hear this as a graphic audio. I can’t wait for the next book.
Eh, three stars seems generous but two stars seems harsh
