The Good:

The nostalgia. I was huge in fandom and Harry Potter and all that when I was younger, and all of that came back to me through reading this book. Not that I had forgotten about it, just this book brought me back. And also the whole feeling of being a freshman in college and starting out at a new place and not knowing anyone.

The portrayal of clinical social anxiety. As a psych person, I am interested in this kind of thing. I liked that social anxiety was shown here not as something cute or good, but something bad and debilitating. And it was definitely clinical as well. Cath really needs some help pronto. And I liked the juxtaposition between how Cath and Wren dealt with the trauma of their mom leaving.

The relationship between Cath and Wren. I really liked them both together and apart, their conflicts and what they shared and how it was really the first time they'd been apart and not living in each others' lives.

Cath and Wren's dad. He just seems so awesome and like such a great dad and I want to give him a hug lol.

The Bad:

Cath. She annoyed me a lot, honestly. I said I enjoyed the portrayal of social anxiety, but it also frustrated me that for most of the book (at least the first part), she did absolutely nothing to help herself. She also thought that turning fanfic in for an original fiction class was okay?! And then she just didn't want to do the assignment and I was just like WHAT. Maybe she really isn't cut out to be a writer if she has that much trouble with anything not fanfic related.

Substance. Reading this book was a bit like eating candy. It was light and cute and fluffy, but nothing beyond that. It was just fun to read and that was that. It didn't mean anything. I actually was more interested in the fanfic/magic world than her story at times cause it was just so cutesy.

Cath & Levi. I mean, I liked them together, but their relationship just felt too...easy. Sure, there was conflict in the initial getting together, but then after that, it was all happy and charming and happily ever after and idk, I feel like college relationships are a lot less smooth sailing usually. It just felt too charming.

So three stars - not enough substance for me to give me any higher (and the main character was annoying).

Did not finish. The protagonist was just too boring.
