I have mixed feelings about this book. I initially thought it was going to be about romance mostly, with sprinkles of how it is to navigate the world as a black woman in society, and her love interest learning about it with her. More lighthearted over heavy, and it was definitely more heavy than I anticipated.
**SPOILER**
There was a lot more conflict of how it is to have a partner with drastic viewpoints, while also showing the many microaggressions that people of color consider and others may not notice the racial aspect of things. It was difficult to side with Jess 100% on certain things, but it was also hard to not see her point entirely.
As someone who also struggles with microaggressions in the workplace and trying to find the right way to address the concerns without being viewed the "angry black woman" the book was a bit hard to get through, because it his so close to home.
Where Cecilia Rabess wrote a great book, I'm giving it a two because as someone who experiences similar instances that Jess went through, reading, for me, is supposed to be an escape, and this was just a deeper dive into everyday issues for me.
