Every Vow You Break: A Novel

“Hitchcockian chills and thrills abound in Swanson's latest mystery, a twisty tale of survival and deception. " – O, the Oprah Magazine

A bride’s dream honeymoon becomes a nightmare when a man with whom she’s had a regrettable one-night stand shows up in this electrifying psychological thriller from the acclaimed author of Eight Perfect Murders.

Abigail Baskin never thought she would fall in love with a millionaire. Then she met Bruce Lamb. He’s a good guy, stable, level-headed, kind—a refreshing change from her previous relationships.

But right before the wedding, Abigail has a drunken one-night stand on her bachelorette weekend. She puts the incident—and the sexy guy who wouldn’t give her his real name—out of her mind, and now believes she wants to be with Bruce for the rest of her life. Their honeymoon on a luxurious, secluded island will be the beginning of their blissful lives together.

Then the mysterious stranger suddenly appears—and Abigail’s future life and happiness are turned upside down. He insists that their passionate night was the beginning of something much, much more. Something special. Something real—and he’s tracked her down to prove it.

Does she tell Bruce and ruin their idyllic honeymoon—and possibly their marriage? Or should she handle this psychopathic stalker on her own? To make the situation worse, strange things begin to happen. She sees a terrified woman in the shadows one night, and no one at the resort seems to believe anything is amiss… including her perfect new husband.

Eh. I didn’t have much hope for this book, since I’m not much of a fan of the books that I’ve read by Peter Swanson. However, I WANTED to love this book. The synopsis sounded SO promising. I did like the set up to the story more than his other books, but this book fell so flat and the ending was honestly ridiculous and so uninteresting. I feel like there is so much more that could’ve been done with this story that could’ve added a lot more interest to the overall plot and ending.
In summary, I was left feeling like Peter Swanson was late on his deadline and had to rush with most of the book. It’s almost like he added some plot resolutions that have worked well for other authors (A Riley Sager book comes to mind) but didn’t manage to make that finale feel unique or significant in any way.

Okay, so THAT wasn’t believable. Yet it started out so gripping…

Hands down this was a phenomenal read. From the very first chapter you are drawn in and the storyline holds your attention until the very end. It is fast paced hard to put down once you start reading it.

I do see why some people do not like it though. The main character spends too much time talking about her back story and there are some sexual aspects to please read with caution but overall I really enjoyed it.

The only reason I rated it 4 stars is the ending was a bit meh. I feel like Peter Swanson could have ended the book so much better it almost feels like he ran out of things to say.

3.5-3.75 rounded up. I was nervous going into this book because it was on my tbr for a while but I didn’t see a lot of good reviews. I haven’t read a good thriller in a while so maybe that’s why I want to give it a higher rating than others. I do agree with others criticism of it being predictable but as I was listening I couldn’t help but still be gripped, thinking “wtf?!” As it kept going. I’m sure if I had read a bunch of other thrillers recently, I may have felt mediocre but I enjoyed it.
