When Lady Holmes (mother of the three Holmes children) goes missing, Enola enlists the help of her two older brothers Sherlock and Mycroft. With mother missing Mycroft being the eldest takes charge and orders Enola to boarding school for girls. In which she will learn proper etiquette, have a valuable education and wear properly fitted clothing with corsets and not Knickerbockers and boots!.
Enola starts deciphering clues that her mother has left her, only to find no notes just cyphers to things such as painting or bedknobs that contain money.
Enola doesn't want to leave her family home and move away to some boarding school. She wants to stay at home and search for her mother. However Mycroft persuades Enola to go to boarding school and she accepts... Or does she? The day comes for Enola to leave and go to boarding school but she has other ideas. Leaving a paper trail in her bedroom to make her brother's think she is going to Wales she is in fact on her way to London in a disguise.. well dressing as a proper lady with a corset and petticoats which is way out of Enola's comfort zone.
Enola gets to London and finds out the Duchess's son is missing. Enola is on her way to find another disguise as she has been compromised and she finds herself in danger. She stumbled across The son of the Duchess on board the basement of a ship where she is being help captive.
After fleeing from captivity and hiding out the son of the Duchess's decides he should go home. The pair head to Scotland Yard to get him home. Upon doing so they bump into Sherlock although Enola flees from her brother he never had a chance to see her. She fled to find her mother, he didn't care about their mother but he did care about Enola.
This was such a brilliant read, I've never read a Sherlock Holmes book so I'm definitely going to have to now.
