OMG, OMG, OMG!!! (yeah, Nikki writes that A LOT in her diary.) She started of with wanting an IPhone sooo badly but mom got her a plain 288 page diary instead. Nikki swears she will NEVER use it. She obviously does. Nikki is not a very likable character. She is shallow and self-centered and fails to show any growth in the book, even as she one-ups popular and cruel MacKenzie in the end. In fact, Nikki, who steals her neighbor's hearing aid and plays pranks on her little sister, is somewhat of a mean girl herself.
Her BFF's are two girls from Library Shelving Chloe and Zoey. They all hate on MacKenzie "The Popular Girl" and she's is love with Brandon, the school photographer and writer. He's the only guy to just "stuff Megan's most wanted b-day invite into his backpack like it was nothing and kept on walking leaving Megan to have a meltdown."
She starts to get recognized for her artistic talents and put it to good use through doing tattoos which started off with get a tat in exchange for donating a book to the school lib. This later becomes a huge booming biz esp. when Zoey and Chloe get in on it. Those two get the popularity and enjoy but Nikki is feeling like she's in a sweat shop doing tats left and right and no time to enjoy her lunch or new found friends like the CPN girls. She feels resentful and quits.
Meantime, she enters the Advanguard Art competition and her picture that she did in summer art camp gets completely destroyed bc she leaned it again her dad's roach mobile and she forgets about it. It's not until she sees MacKenzie that she realizes her painting is against the roach mobile as it pulls away and we all hear "CRUNCH" into million of splinter and canvase pieces. She cries and feels completely defeated as MacKenzie uses her lipgloss and writes Roach Girl on Nik's locker.
Feeling completed like a loser, she tells her parents she wants OUT of hte school. In the meantime, Brandon sees all this and takes photos of everyone's worthy tats that Nik has done and B, Z, &C all get together and piece it all together and enter the photo's of the tats. Later as Nik's parents are in the office withdrawing her, she finds out she WON! Wheeeeee! She realizes they are her friends and not using her and they all forgive each other. Brandon at the end asks Nik if she want's to be his lab partner to which she answers, "Wheeeeee" and declares, she's gotta be her.
While amusing at times, I will find it hard to do any type of children's book celebration with this one.
