Doctor Sleep

Now a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!

From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining--an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is "[a] vivid frightscape" (The New York Times).

Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance's sanity, as his paranormal gift known as "the shining" opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook--and his father's legacy of alcoholism and violence--kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname "Doctor Sleep" by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone--who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining--the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan's own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl's soul and survival...

I hadn't read King in many years but was intrigued by the thought of a sequel to one of my favorite King novels and movies. While the novel strayed too far into the supernatural than I usually am comfortable with, I enjoyed the characterizations and the ultimate "show down" between good and evil. I would recommend this book for a fun and thrilling read.

Strong Stephen King novel, unsatisfying conclusion to the Shining. Danny's life after the events of The Shining are bleak. The story has suspense and an interesting villian, The True Knot. Focuses on psychic abilities and how it can enhance life yet also how it can make one a target.

I loved the series which is why this one got such a high rating. I thought it did well at keeping with King's tradition.

It's wonderful to know what happened to Jack Torrent's son. He survives from the trauma of his childhood but it's a quite heavy book on alcoholism as well and another kind of alcoholism that makes them brutally kill young people with the shining ability. Great book, I devoured it.

I listened to the audio book. I really enjoyed it. I'm wondering if would have been scarier to read. I didn't find the audio scary, but I did enjoy Will Patton's reading.
