Doctor Sleep

Now a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!

From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining--an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is "[a] vivid frightscape" (The New York Times).

Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance's sanity, as his paranormal gift known as "the shining" opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook--and his father's legacy of alcoholism and violence--kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname "Doctor Sleep" by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone--who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining--the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan's own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl's soul and survival...

I hadn't read King in many years but was intrigued by the thought of a sequel to one of my favorite King novels and movies. While the novel strayed too far into the supernatural than I usually am comfortable with, I enjoyed the characterizations and the ultimate "show down" between good and evil. I would recommend this book for a fun and thrilling read.

“There came a time when you realized that moving on was pointless. That you took yourself with you wherever you went.”

Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep is more than just a sequel to The Shining—it’s a haunting, emotional journey about battling inner demons, the importance of found family, and the terrifying ways the past clings to us. Danny Torrance, now grown and struggling with alcoholism, mirrors his father’s darkest tendencies. But unlike Jack, Danny fights to break the cycle. (As a person going on three years sober, I truly loved this relatable storyline!)

His road to redemption collides with Abra Stone, a young girl with the gift of the shining, forcing him to step up as her protector against the nightmarish True Knot, a group that preys on children with the shining.

The novel is rich with classic King tropes:
✨ The Haunted Protagonist – Danny wrestles with addiction and the ghosts (literal and figurative) of his past.
✨ Found Family – Abra and Danny’s bond is as powerful as any blood relation… and maybe there is a true relation as well?

I really enjoyed seeing what Danny got into after the horrors of the Overlook. Following his journey of sobriety was so devastating and inspiring. I liked the plot with the True Know and Abra and I think that it makes so much sense for the True Knot to exist in this world with kids who shine. The conclusion of the story taking place at where The Overlook once stood, was a great call back to The Shining and had me on the edge of my seat.

Strong Stephen King novel, unsatisfying conclusion to the Shining. Danny's life after the events of The Shining are bleak. The story has suspense and an interesting villian, The True Knot. Focuses on psychic abilities and how it can enhance life yet also how it can make one a target.
