Dire Bound (The Wolves of Ruin, 1)

A USA Today Bestseller!
A New York Times Bestseller!

Fourth Wing meets The Hunger Games in this spicy, page-turning romantasy where humans and direwolves forge unbreakable bonds and fight for survival at all costs.

Only the worthy survive the Bonding Trials. She'll risk her life--and her heart--to be one of them.

Meryn Cooper has always hated the Bonded, elite warriors who form mental links with the massive, vicious direwolves they ride. While they live in luxury, Meryn struggles to keep her family out of poverty. When her little sister, Saela, is kidnapped--stolen across the border by the immortal monsters her country has spent centuries fighting--Meryn's world falls apart.

Desperate to cross the front and save her sister, Meryn enlists in the army and is thrown into the deadly Bonding Trials, where any mistake will cost her life.

Now Meryn must survive four months of training at the castle. She is bound to a feral direwolf who refuses to communicate. The other trainees would love to spill her common blood. And her cold and beautiful instructor, Stark Therion, is eager to punish any weakness.

Everything is a competition, and everyone is out to get her--everyone except the dangerously handsome crown prince, whose attention adds another target to her back. In the castle, every smile hides a knife...and the halls hide dark secrets.

It's bond or bleed. Duel or die. Failure is ruin.

I ate this up. I could go without the constant reference to "alley cat" but otherwise I genuinely enjoyed. The switch up at the end - OH BOY. Definitely has me on my toes for book 2.

Meet Meryn Cooper, street fighter, daughter, sister—and reluctant recruit to the Bonded. “A Rawbond who begged to be let free at the beginning of the Trials. A pack member who recently shut out her direwolf and packmates during a moment of crisis. A ladder-climber” sleeping with royal prince Killian. She’s “bonded to a direwolf, and the king himself just authorized [their] relationship before the entire court.” But Meryn’s “got places to be. A sister to save. The love of my life to return to.” Enter Stark, a handsome and “impressive warrior, psycho killer instincts included,” a bloodthirsty monster worse than Meryn could have ever imagined. But if they have to battle Siphons to save Saela and other missing kids, she’s willing to take one for the team. “One way or another—whether through Killian’s power, my bond with Anassa, or with the strength of my own blood-soaked hands— I’m going to bring my sister home.” “Survival here is binary. You live or you die…The only way out is through, and the packs do not tolerate weakness amongst their ranks…I can’t free Saela on my own. Not as I am. Thankfully, I know someone who can. Someone with real authority. Someone who can officially order these dungeons opened, and the children released. Someone who loves me, who would do anything to help Saela. Who always has.” Will it be Royal Prince Killian or Alpha Direwolf Stark? “Who’s stronger? Who’s faster? Who’s smarter? Who will be dead this time tomorrow?” “Today is a very good day to weed out any unsuitable common blood…Super hot warriors riding mystical beasts and wielding mysterious magic” in a world immersed in “the rush of fur, the thud of paws, the flash of fangs [whose] coordination carries a predatory oneness, like two killers who share a single mind, a single goal: Hunt. Kill. Triumph.” But even magic has its bounds. Sable Sorensen’s Dire Bound is a masterpiece!

I feel like this book was way too long. It was pretty obvious what the twists were from about halfway through the book so it felt frustrating to have to wait a couple of hundred pages before we could address them.

I understand the comparison to Fourth Wing, but it just didn't scratch that itch for me.
