Definitely Better Now: A Novel

A touching and deeply funny debut about starting over sober only to discover life's biggest messes are still waiting right where you left them.

The very last person anyone should worry about is Emma. Yes, hi, she's an alcoholic. But she's officially been sober for one entire year. That's twelve months of better health. Fifty-two whole weeks of focusing on nothing but her nine-to-five office job, group meetings, and avoiding the kind of bad decisions that previously left her awash in shame and regret. It's also been 365 days of not dating. And with her new dating profile, Emma, 26, of New York is ready to put herself back out there.

Except--was dating always this complicated? And did Emma's mother really have to choose now to move in with her new boyfriend? Being assigned to plan her office's holiday party feels like icing on the suddenly very overwhelming cake until her estranged father reappears with devastating news. Icing, meet cherry on top. But then there's Ben, the charming IT guy who, despite Emma's awkwardness and shortcomings, seems to maybe actually get her? Sobriety is turning out to be far from the flawless future Emma had once envisioned for herself, but as she allows herself to open up to Ben and confront difficult past relationships, she's beginning to realize that taking things one day at a time might just be the perfectly imperfect path she's meant to be on.

Bittersweet and darkly hilarious, Ava Robinson's debut novel about navigating sobriety and complicated family dynamics is witty, heartbreaking, and profoundly relatable.

This was an interesting read! I struggle sometimes with flawed characters because they sound whiny to me and I often don’t want to be reminded of reality. However, Emma was wonderfully flawed in my opinion. I thought she was honest and didn’t come across as self-centered but rather transformative and wanting to be better which is such a relatable quality, no matter what our struggle is. I learned a lot about addiction, sobriety and AA which was a new theme for me to read. I liked the bits of romance and absolutely ADORED Ben! Overall, I enjoyed the plot and character development and it proved to be a read that surprised me. Absolutely recommend, plus it was a great debut for Ava Robinson, I’ll be checking out more by her in the future.

I have mixed relationships with AA and it’s principals so at times, that was a little difficult to read through and I sometimes found myself skipping past reading through all the prayers but overall I appreciated her character development.

As someone who appreciates the complexities of life and the beauty of transformation, I wholeheartedly recommend Ava Robinson’s “Definitely Better Now.” This debut novel is a bittersweet and darkly hilarious journey through sobriety and the messiness of life that awaits us. Emma’s story of starting over sober, navigating family dynamics, and finding love is both witty and profoundly relatable. It’s a touching reminder that life’s biggest challenges can also lead to its most rewarding moments. For anyone looking for a story that’s as heartfelt as it is humorous, “Definitely Better Now” is a must-read!

I absolutely adored this debut novel by author Ava Robinson. Definitely Better Now, is a fresh, modern, POV on a young woman’s journey to and through the beginning of her sobriety. The novel’s main character Emma is undeniably relatable, witty, but most of all human. She is just trying to make her way through life’s ups and downs like the rest of us, trying to feel as “normal” as possible. I believe this is a must read! Thank you Harlequin Trade Publishing and Netgalley for allowing me access to this Arc in exchange for my honest review.
