In Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda, Hazel Sharp returns to her hometown of Mirror Lake after her stepfather’s death, only to uncover unsettling truths about her family’s past. Her mother’s long-ago disappearance resurfaces when the drought reveals a submerged car in the lake, sparking new suspicions. As Hazel digs deeper, she confronts secrets tied to her stepbrothers and the legacy of their father, a former detective. The novel explores resilience, identity, and the cost of uncovering buried truths in a town that guards its own. What if going home meant uncovering everything your family never wanted you to know? This was my first Megan Miranda book and it didn't disappoint. The book has some creepy vibes and tbh Mirror Lake in entirety sounds creepy af. The tension builds slowly but steadily, with every chapter peeling back another layer of secrets that made me question everyone. Like is the entire town just full of awful people?? Hazel’s return home is emotional and unsettling, and the way the town seems to close ranks around its mysteries gave me chills. For a first Megan Miranda book, it was a solid read and I'm glad I picked it up. If you like thrillers with buried truths and a protagonist who refuses to back down, this one’s worth the read.

Mirror Lake is a typical small town and the Holts are a typical small town family. These statements are true and they’re also not true. From the beginning our perceptions of the town and family start to unravel. Hazel is a somewhat unreliable narrator. What is really going on in Mirror Lake and is her home haunted? This book will twist you up!

You ever read a book where everything would be solved if the characters (siblings no less) would just talk to each other?? That was literally the plot of this book. A drought revealing long hidden secrets of a small town, sibling rivalry, and just tomfoolery that all would have been mostly cleared if people stopped “protecting” each other and said what was on their minds. The villain of all this became increasingly obvious by the second part of this book but it still played out well.

I wanted to love this book, however, I did not. Kept reading it hoping I’d care more about the characters but finally gave up. Frustrating
