Dark Horse: An Orphan X Novel

By Gregg Hurwitz

*NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER* Gregg Hurwitz's New York Times bestselling series returns when Orphan X faces his most challenging mission ever in Dark Horse. Evan Smoak is a man with many identities and a challenging past. As Orphan X, he was a government assassin for the off-the-books Orphan Program. After he broke with the Program, he adopted a new name and a new mission--The Nowhere Man, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble. Having just survived an attack on his life and the complete devastation of his base of operations, as well as his complicated (and deepening) relationship with his neighbor Mia Hall, Evan isn't interested in taking on a new mission. But one finds him anyway. Aragon Urrea is a kingpin of a major drug-dealing operation in South Texas. He's also the patron of the local area--supplying employment in legitimate operations, providing help to the helpless, rough justice to the downtrodden, and a future to a people normally with little hope. He's complicated--a not completely good man, who does bad things for often good reasons. However, for all his money and power, he is helpless when one of the most vicious cartels kidnaps his innocent 18-year-old daughter, spiriting her away into the armored complex that is their headquarters in Mexico. With no other way to rescue his daughter, he turns to The Nowhere Man. Now not only must Evan figure out how to get into the impregnable fortress of a heavily armed, deeply paranoid cartel leader, but he must decide if he should help a very bad man--no matter how just the cause.

WHOO HOO!!!!! Now THAT is my kind of story!!! Orphan X taking down two drug cartels! WHOO YA!!! I. LOVE. THIS. SERIES!!! Yeah, I know I’ve said that before but, that’s just because after seven books, it’s become a really good series. Actually, it’s Evan Smoak (Orphan X) that I LOVE!!! He keeps getting better and better too.

Within the first couple of chapters, I am laughing hysterically about Evan’s latest trials and tribulations. Leave it up to Evan/Hurwitz to make a fan/reader laugh about his plunge from a 21-story building and slamming down onto the sidewalk below. For the record, he was wearing a parachute, but it was still hilarious just the same as relayed by Evan/Hurwitz. Loved the Wiley Coyote reference too. It fit the moment. Over the course of the series, Hurwitz has developed Evan's sense of humor to make him appear more humanlke and humble.

I LOVE the dynamics of the relationship between Evan and Joey too especially when she’s teasing him about his OCD quirkiness. Although, the way Evan deals with his OCD peculiarities are also rather amusing and entertaining too. Hurwitz ensures that every interaction between Evan and Joey has the reader either cracking up over their antics and their quasi-sibling like rivalry (think Millennial big brother vs Zoomer little sister) or tearing up over their developing love, concern and dedication for each other.

Evan is a complicated character and Hurwitz spends a good deal of time in Evan’s head, which can elicit an array of thoughts from the reader: confused, annoyed, sympathetic, impressed, astonished, amused, entertained just to name a few of feelings I felt. The story reads like a Die Hard installment meets Superman with Evan exhibiting his super human feats with the military precision he was trained to perform.

It was another late night last night to stay up so I could finish it because I simply couldn't go to sleep until I knew how it ended. It will be interesting to see where his relationship with Mia goes but it's that epilogue that lets the reader know we are in for some more Orphan X magnificence.

This one did not feel believable at all. I realize none of these are realistic but this one crossed the line into a bit crazy. Because of that it dragged for me.
