Dark and Shallow Lies

"A totally engrossing small-town mystery about what happens when you finally dig up long-buried secrets.” —Jessica Goodman, New York Times bestselling author of They'll Never Catch Us
A New York Times bestseller!
A teen girl disappears from her small town deep in the bayou, where magic festers beneath the surface of the swamp like water rot, in this chilling supernatural thriller for fans of Natasha Preston, Karen McManus, and E. Lockhart.
La Cachette, Louisiana, is the worst place to be if you have something to hide.
This tiny town, where seventeen-year-old Grey spends her summers, is the self-proclaimed Psychic Capital of the World—and the place where Elora Pellerin, Grey's best friend, disappeared six months earlier.
Grey can't believe that Elora vanished into thin air any more than she can believe that nobody in a town full of psychics knows what happened. But as she digs into the night that Elora went missing, she begins to realize that everybody in town is hiding something—her grandmother Honey; her childhood crush Hart; and even her late mother, whose secrets continue to call to Grey from beyond the grave.
When a mysterious stranger emerges from the bayou—a stormy-eyed boy with links to Elora and the town's bloody history—Grey realizes that La Cachette's past is far more present and dangerous than she'd ever understood. Suddenly, she doesn't know who she can trust. In a town where secrets lurk just below the surface, and where a murderer is on the loose, nobody can be presumed innocent—and La Cachette's dark and shallow lies may just rip the town apart.

honestly really good book. hard for me to put down
I'm trying to cut back on my book purchases, but after checking this out from the library, I will have to add it to my shelves. Now I'm going to see if my library has more of her work!
This was amazing. only till the last two pages i found out the truth. I didn’t supect it on bit o. m. g
At the center of this book is the disappearance of Elora, the best friend of Gray who has come back to her hometown for the summer. It's such a dark and magical story, filled with intrigue and mystery that honestly left me shocked. What I loved most was the fact that the author did such an amazing job leading you to believe one thing, only for her to spin you around in another direction. It's a fantastic example of a really good mystery that you can't just easily guess based on your initial assumptions.
Woof. Some reactions to this book tear it to shreds as viciously as a rougarou shreds flesh.
Here is a picture of a cute little rougarou for reference. Aww.

I thought this was good. I liked it. It took a while to pick up; I was about 150 pages in before I couldn't put it down.
Some other random thoughts and reactions because I just can't write a proper review right thiscentury second:
- It's really atmospheric. The bayou is detailed so generously that I could practically feel its heat and smell its bayou-y smell. And I've never been there.
- The characters all have some kind of cool psychic like gift. They are all fairly memorable and easy to tell apart. I wasn't going, "wait, who?" 300 pages in (this has definitely happened before).
- Who can you trust? Mmm. Not many folks. I kind of enjoyed the whiplash.
- Grey wasn't an MC that I worshipped and admired, but she wasn't the worst I've encountered. I found her likeable enough.
-I wasn't dissatisfied with the ending. I also wasn't shocked to my core. I had a hunch or two as I was reading. The real climax was perhaps a little rushed, but I don't know that it would have made sense to drag it out any longer.
'Knowing is hard,' he says, 'but it's a thing you can survive. The not knowing will kill you in the end. It's the secrets that fester.'
A breeze moves through, and I hear the tinkling of wind chimes.
'How do you keep a secret in a town full of psychics?' I ask him, and light flashes bright inside those ice-fire eyes.
'You tell the truth,' he answers. 'At least part of it.'
