Set in Philadelphia in 1876, in the midst of the Centennial Exhibition, 17-year-old Katherine is headed there for a different reason than most. After the loss of her twin sister Anna, she is wracked with guilt and sorrow and wants to end it all.
The sisters had once been as close as you would imagine twin sisters would be. Then Anna falls in love with Bennett, the "baker boy," and Katherine feels her drifting further and further away. She's always felt protective of Anna, but finally decides she won't be her protector anymore, since Anna seems bent on doing what she wants anyway, without a care for the consequences. But then the horrible accident...
Kephart carefully weaves her story between the present and the past, leading up to Anna's tragic death and its aftermath.
