Concrete Rose: A Printz Honor Winner

International phenomenon Angie Thomas revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give in this searing and poignant exploration of Black boyhood and manhood. A Printz Honor Book!

If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison.

Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control.

Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father.

Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different.

When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can't just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.

What a phenomenal book!! I definitely think that this book could be read before or after The Hate U Give. I read this book after and it really gave me some perspective on some of the characters. A friend of mine read this one first and loved both just the same. I think that is a testament to Thomas' amazing writing!! In this book we meet Maverick, Starr's father, and we follow his journey as a high school senior living in Garden Heights and part of the King Lords. It may seem cliché to say this but there really are twists and turns at every page and every chapter. Maverick is dealing with being a father, being a high school senior, getting a job to support his family, and being part of the King Lords gang. It is a lot for a teen to hold on their shoulders. But Maverick wants to prove that he can be a man and provide for those he loves. But being part of a gang also means that sometimes he is put into situations where he is caught between loyalty and tough decisions. This book was one that made you feel every emotion that Mav feels - anger, jealousy, sadness, happiness, fear, and desperation. Anyone who has read The Hate U Give NEEDS to read this book!!

Not as strong as hate u give. Good story but fails to bridge the gap of how he was arrested and why. It stops abruptly after too much day to day descriptions.

Well, there’s some birth control for you. What a mess.

The scene when he’s high while gardening made me snort.

In this prequel to The Hate You Give, it is the back story to Maverick and his journey to fatherhood and finding his place he wants in the world. It was interesting to see the previous dynamic of King and Maverick before their fallout. I do like the author's style and enjoy her reads. The chapters are easy and well spread.
