"Nesbø never lets a page go by without making characters and situations vivid."—Houston Chronicle
“I can’t think of anyone who makes my skin crawl like Nesbo."—The New York Times Book Review
When the Norwegian ambassador to Thailand is found dead in a Bangkok brothel, Inspector Harry Hole is dispatched from Oslo to help hush up the case. But once he arrives Harry discovers that this case is about much more than one random murder. There is something else, something more pervasive, scrabbling around behind the scenes. Or, put another way, for every cockroach you see in your hotel room, there are hundreds behind the walls. Surrounded by round-the-clock traffic noise, Harry wanders the streets of Bangkok lined with go-go bars, temples, opium dens, and tourist traps, trying to piece together the story of the ambassador’s death even though no one asked him to, and no one wants him to—not even Harry himself.

One of his better ones! Set in ‘90’s Bangkok, the action takes place in the familiar settings of Koh San, Patpong and along the Chao Phraya . Fast paced, full of twists and turns - everything you expect from a classy crime thriller.
To preface this - I have read many of Nesbø's books and enjoyed them thoroughly - even wishing I could read them in Norwegian, instead of the Britishified translations. Harry Hole is a character that resonates with me - a talented detective teetering on the brink with every breath.
And this particular book was incredibly difficult to slog through. Part of it was the setting - the seamy side of Thailand is really repellant - and part of it was that the story just stalled out so many times. I finished. That is all.
