Christine

By Stephen King

#1 New York Times bestselling author and master storyteller Stephen King’s classic tale of an evil car that brings hellish terror to its new owner. It’s love at first sight for high school student Arnie Cunningham when he and his best friend Dennis Guilder spot the dilapidated 1958 red-and-white Plymouth Fury for sale—dubbed “Christine” by its original cantankerous owner—rusting away on a front lawn of their suburban Pennsylvania neighborhood. Dennis knows that Arnie’s never had much luck in the popularity department, or really taken an interest in owning a car…but Christine quickly changes all that. Arnie suddenly has the newfound confidence to stick up for himself, going as far as dating the most beautiful girl at Libertyville High—transfer student Leigh Cabot—even as a mysteriously restored Christine systematically and terrifyingly consumes every aspect of Arnie’s life. Dennis and Leigh soon realize that they must uncover the awful truth behind a car with a horrifying and murderous history. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and heaven help anyone who gets in Christine’s way…

When it comes to king this is not his best. I believe he once described it as a "greasy cheeseburger". Like you want it and you enjoy it when you're eating, but 30 minutes later you wish you hadn't. It's a little too much like The Shining but a car instead of a hotel, but The Shining is much better written (despite being 200+ pages shorter.)

When Arnie Cunningham spots Christine (a 1958 Plymouth Fury) sitting at the side of the road with a “for sale” sign, he immediately falls in love with the car and has to have her. With the car in his possession and much to the dismay of his friends and family, he becomes so obsessed with the car that his personality starts to change. And one by one anyone that poses a threat to Arnie or Christine start to die.

Roland LeBay is one of the most disgusting characters ever.
King really knows how to make you wanna know what’s going to happen next.
King knows how to make reprehensible characters period.
Loved that this didn’t really have the happy ending (does any of his books?)
However, when this book dragged, it dragged!

I would say, though, that this may have snuck onto my Top 10 works for King.

Saw the movie before I read the book so didn’t enjoy it as much because I had character images already envisioned in my minds eye. Read it many moons ago so am up for another read if one of the clubs is interested.
