Children of Dune

Book Three in the Magnificent Dune Chronicles—the Bestselling Science Fiction Adventure of All Time

The Children of Dune are twin siblings Leto and Ghanima Atreides, whose father, the Emperor Paul Muad’Dib, disappeared in the desert wastelands of Arrakis nine years ago. Like their father, the twins possess supernormal abilities—making them valuable to their manipulative aunt Alia, who rules the Empire in the name of House Atreides.

Facing treason and rebellion on two fronts, Alia’s rule is not absolute. The displaced House Corrino is plotting to regain the throne while the fanatical Fremen are being provoked into open revolt by the enigmatic figure known only as The Preacher. Alia believes that by obtaining the secrets of the twins’ prophetic visions, she can maintain control over her dynasty.

But Leto and Ghanima have their own plans for their visions—and their destinies....

This book is a prime example of why telling instead of showing is bad writing. The narrative is carried by dialogue (sloppy) and the world building elements are shoehorned in without being tied into the broader cultural, social, and historical dynamics of Dune (sloppy). Alia wasn't actually threatening in the slightest--we were just TOLD that she was threatening. When action happens, it comes out of no where with no build up because all that happens is dialogue! This book could have EASILY been twice as long if Herbert just slowed down and actually explained what was happening through descriptive narratives. This book also has one of my least favorite tropes--children acting like 40 year olds. Just make them older. The way Herbert writes about religion is unrealistic. No one talks about religion, especially their own, in the way Herbert does besides 20th century anthropologists. Additionally, Arabic/Islamic references are just thrown in there to give it an "exotic" flair (orientalist). It's giving rough draft. I couldn't wait to finish this book so it could be over.

Dune 3 Leto II The Younger and Ghanima carry on the legacy of their father Paul. (Dune, with kids! ... Very dangerous kids.)
